Nawset > Nawset Photography  > project 365 > The Keepers
Early in 2009, I decided to capture an image every calendar day for an entire year. 365 days later, I have more gray hair, have aged a decade and alienated loved ones, but I did it and, most importantly, I didn’t miss a single day.

For a true life experience, click here (Day 1) and work your way backward.

And please, comments and criticisms are welcomed, both on composition and technique, and on content. Thanks for looking.

Nawset Photography > Fini! (Day 365)

Little self-portrait for my last shot. And no, the wording was not done in post; I had a shirt printed up for the occasion. Seriously.

First some facts about the project and then a little homework for you:

Facts:

•	365 successive days of shooting and not one cheat;
•	100,047 page views from 1,582 unique visitors in 31 countries (excluding web bots);
•	1,142 comments (special thanks to Irish and Dakota);
•	280 times I drove my wife Rita crazy with questions like, “which do you like better, this or this?”;
•	40 years I have aged in the last 365 days.

Now your homework:

(1)	If I have made you smile or chuckle even once over the past year, please do me the honor of leaving a guestbook comment telling me so (just click here).

(2)	If you are interested in being notified of future projects (e.g. the upcoming iPhone Chronicles) or the book I am putting together (sounds impressive doesn’t it), please boogie on over to Nawset Photography's brand spanking new Facebook page and become a fan or simply drop me a line at pete@nawset.com.

Thanks for stopping by. Now, get along little doggies.

Nawset Photography > 10:15 (Day 364)

Had planned on just penning a jovial thanks to all that have supported this project throughout the past year (e.g. Rita, Dave, Andi, Brian, Cindy, Leslie, Bob, Greg, Ken, Laura, Julie, Irishmurr, Cornfu, Christine, James H, Dakota Cowboy, Melissa O, Tewmom, Chaz, Bucky, Bres, etc.); folks too many to list here. I couldn’t have made it without your encouragement and positive feedback along the way.

However, I really need to go back to basics and thank my Mom (who passed away this morning) and my Dad for making me the person I am today. I love you both so much.

Nawset Photography > Support (Day 363)

Don’t want to be a buzz kill so close to the end of my project but I can’t sugar coat it; today was the hardest day of my life.

Spent most of it at the hospital visiting my ailing Mom. Fortunately, she had lots of family around (four members above) to support her (and my Dad).

We all agreed that I should continue shooting.

Nawset Photography > FDR (aka Party Animal) (Day 362)

Nothing like defacing a national monument (in this case, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington DC) to begin the new year.

To see more of my handiwork on one of this wildman's Freemason brothers, click here.

Thanks to my brother Dave for being my coconspirator.

Nawset Photography > No, Bullwinkles, No! (Day 361)

An unplanned visit to the Manchester, NH airport today brought me face to face with an epic struggle for survival; two moose were having a little "conversation" near baggage carousel #5.

Nawset Photography > "Z" Is For Zed (Day 360)

“Zed’s dead, baby.  Zed’s dead.”

Macro of the Z key on Rita’s vintage Royal Quiet De Luxe; one of Hemingway’s favorites.

If you don’t know the quote: Google and then Netflix it; you owe it to yourself. Trust me.

And that concludes my alphabet mini-assignment. Hope you enjoyed it.

Nawset Photography > Strange Superficial Scleral Squatter (Day 359)

Made a quick visit to the ophthalmologist this morning to have a little unidentifiable, something something pulled off my left eyeball. Fortunately, while painful, it was nothing serious. Molto buona per me as it’s the eye that I use in the viewfinder.

My Doc was nice enough to let me play with his equipment when we were done. Of course, I then had to futz with it in post (the actual device is mostly black).

PS - Props to CNazz (aka Chaz) and Bucky for the frosted barley pops after work tonight; just what the doctor ordered.

Nawset Photography > Solitude (Day 358)

An amazingly beautiful snowfall this afternoon took me to a favorite spot in town. Fortunately, I had the day off so that I could enjoy it.

Nawset Photography > So Pete, What Is Nawset? (Day 357)

Lately, I have had a few questions about the origin of “Nawset” so I thought that I would provide a brief explanation for those interested. If you aren’t, read no further.

As a child, I summered, and then subsequently attended high school, on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. My favorite local beach was called Nauset. It continues to be my favorite spot on earth and we try to make it back at least once a year.

I decided fifteen years ago to try to get “Nauset” on a license plate but it was taken so I went phonetic with “Nawset” (the original Indian spelling for the place before the Europeans decided to Frenchify it). This later became my url and the rest is, how do you say, history. Told you it would be brief.

Interestingly, a Boston-based heavy metal band has recently popped up with the same name. Not sure whether they came up with it on their own or saw me driving on Route 128. Not a big fan either way.

Footnote: The above is the result of a spell of free time and Photoshop Mobile for the iPhone; it really is amazing what you can do with the thing.

Nawset Photography > Taxi Drivers and Venereal Disease (Day 356)

My brother Brian gave this statue of Saint Fiacre, the patron saint of gardening, to my mom for her garden.

Good ol’ Fiacre also happens to be the patron saint of venereal disease sufferers, hemorrhoids, and taxi cab drivers; his mom would be so proud.

Complete aside: On the way home today, we witnessed a spot of trouble at National Airport, click here to read all about it.

PS - Big shout out to Brian for holding the umbrella for me on this one.

Nawset Photography > Merry Christmas! (Day 355)

Kind of an unorthodox Christmas this year; this is the sum total of the seasonal decorations at my folk's house.

Cool viewed large.

(2009-12-25 1:48pm)
Nawset Photography > Shemp (Day 354)

There is a house near my folks in Virginia that easily has hundreds of Christmas decorations filling their yard – it is completely insane. One of my favorites is their grimy Moe, Larry, and Shemp display – not real Christmasy but fun none-the-less.

Didn’t realize until now that this is identical in composition to my decapitated Santa on Day 346. Oh well …

(2009-12-24 9:00pm)
Nawset Photography > Old Town (Day 353)

Spent the afternoon walking around Old Town Alexandria with my broheim and wife. The wealthy folk there seem to be competing to see who has the nicest wreath.

The bluish hue was created in post; for some reason I liked the effect.

(2009-12-23 1:36pm)
Nawset Photography > Foreshadow (Day 352)

Many of my visitors might recall my missed jumping cow Daily earlier in the year (Day 118 to be precise). Well, while I was bummed at the time that I didn’t get the shot, I knew that there would always be next year.

That wasn’t so true today. The above iPhone shot of my airline seat-back tray provides eerie foreshadowing to a missed photo opportunity that will haunt me all the rest of my days! Dramatic, huh?

On the way home from the airport, we passed a car that only moments earlier had burst into flames; police and fire weren’t even yet on the scene, just a tow truck that happened by. My brother Dave slowed as I leaned out the window, camera in hand. As we passed, I tried desperately to get a shot but I could not lock focus. What I regret most is not asking him to stop and let me jump out and shoot – I might have gotten an epic, once-in-a-lifetime image!

For visual context, click here to see a blurry, HDR treated, approach shot.

Nawset Photography > Random Evil (Day 351)

As I am sure you will agree, nothing screams that you love Christmas more than driving around with a satanic, clown scarecrow in the back of your pickup. The least they could have done was toss a Santa hat on him in the spirit of the season.

Little iPhone grab shot in the parking lot of the local Home Depot; did a bit of tone mapping in post to give it a slight HDR vibe.

I guess I will submit this as a bonus “You Might Be A Redneck When …” shot. You are so very welcome.
