"Mad" King Ludwig (Day 206)
Spent the day visiting Schloss Neuschwanstein, or “Mad” King Ludwig’s Castle (located in the Bavarian Alps, two hours south of Munich). Little bummed that the mountain side of the structure was under renovations (and caught in this view from Mary’s Bridge) but we weren’t surprised; we have found this to be true for many structures across Europe over the past several years - they need maintenance and cleaning or else they crumble.
Neuschwanstein (the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Walt Disney World) was King Ludwig’s homage to Wagner. His is a sad story: King at 18, declared insane at 41, just six months after moving into the still-not-complete castle and dead, from “drowning”, along with his psychiatrist, a day later.

We actually took the bus up but walked down - we were provided a very short window of time there due to train schedules from Munich so didn't want to risk missing our tour time at the castle.
