Ah, Grasshopper (Day 151)
Hearing about the suicide of Kwai Chang Caine (aka David Carradine, star of the 1970s U.S. television show "Kung Fu,") in Hong Kong today put me in a zenish mood. So I found it necessary to photograph the whelk shell; a personal symbol for the vastness of the universe and the true meaning of life.
Well, not really ... Actually, I was hoping for some wonderful literary quote or religious reference to the whelk for my post today but unbelievably there is absolutely no mention of it on the Internets other then scientific information like the fact that it is a carnivore ... who'd have guessed? Check it out; kind of surprised me.
Update (2009-06-05): Looks like it wasn't suicide at all ... even more tragic ...

on June 7, 2009Beautiful. I'll have to break out my old box of shells when I'm feeling zen.

on June 6, 2009Do people actually get bit by whelks? I mean, where are the teeth? Can they jump? (I wonder if what's-his-name ever considered using one in a dog fight...)

on June 5, 2009Definitely feels zenish. Am I typing that right? Nice composition, the circles and off-centered focus really pull me eye through the frame. Nice tones too.

on June 5, 2009Great photo, man! and a nice tribute. much more classy than what i did. i should have given mine some more thought. i love the sepia and the DOF is right on. i like the angle you chose and how you framed it to have a light upper left and dark bottom right... kind of yin yang-ish.
